Conch-L’s number one rule is “Rule No. 1: NO Advertising.” However, in the
details it says, "People wishing to exchange shells and publications may
announce that their trading lists are available, but should not post lists
to CONCH-L."
My guess is that announcement of your wish to trade for a shell is analogous
to offering a trade list and if you make such a request and asked that
respondents reply to your personal email off-line, there would probably be
no objection.
Conch-L administration may wish to elaborate.

I know that commercial messages are not allowed on Conch-L. But what about
trade requests? If I am looking for a certain shell, is it permissable to
ask on the list if anyone has a specimen they would like to exchange for
other shells? I never see such requests posted, and it seems that such
requests would be posted if they are allowed. On the other hand, I can't
remember reading that such posts are not allowed. So, clarification would
be appreciated.
