Metrology or remote sensing from afar; naturally having a ground reference.
Reference this against that of a known.
Often we will see a coin as a physical reference in a picture.
Consider reflected or absorbed light. Other signatures not often made.

Dousing rod might be one tool, but that is for pond/pool use as bended
arms are needed :-)
