I don't know what the difference is between the slime of limacid and
arionid slugs and that of other landsnails, but it is far more
persistent than that of say Helix aspersa. I assume that slug slime is
much more resistant to drying; I have seen large black Arion ater
crossing broad dusty dirt roads on hot dry days in the Canadian
Rockies.I don't see externally-shelled landsnails doing that.
