What the ocean wants to do is create a semi-straight line. If a groin or
a rockwall is put perpendicular to the beach, the ocean tries to fill in
so that it can resume its assault on the coast. The ocean has no concept
of time, so it is very patient. What we do is try to hold back the
oceanic advance. The ocean doesn't care.
