An interesting point about land hermits: the Eastern Pacific ones (I
collected shells with them in Costa Rica's Pacific shores years ago)
secrete an acid or something to enlarge the opening of the shell and
dissolve all the columella and some of the aperture of the shell, so the
shell is no good. However, the Caribbean land hermits don't seem to do
that.
