Siphocypraea problematica Heilprin, 1887 is known from Florida and the
Carolinas, in the late to latest Pliocene Waccamaw and Caloosahatchie
Formations. The genus originated by the Early Miocene, occurring in the
Chipola Formation (Siphocypraea s.s.), with Muracypraea ranging from
Miocene to Recent. Olsson and Petit (1968, Bull. Am. Paleo. 54(242),
available as part of Paleontological Research Institute Special Publication
19, Papers on Neogene Mollusks by Axel A. Olsson) discuss the genus.
Current information on distribution is in L. Campbell, 1993, Pliocene
molluscs from the Yorktown and Chowan River Formations in Virginia,
Virginia Division of Mineral Resources Publication 127. This lineage is
highly variable in the Pliocene of Florida; Petuch illustrates several of
the variations as new genera and species.
