Dear David,

The description you give is that of the subgenus Erato (Eratoena). The
odds-on favorite ID for your shell is:

Erato (Eratoena) sulcifera (G. B. Sowerby II, 1832).

It is reported from Palk Bay, Sri Lanka - among other Indian Ocean localities.

Ref: Cate, C. N., 1977. A review of the Eratoidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda).
Veliger 19(3): 341-366. Jan. 1. [p. 350; pl. 18 (worn shell from Reeve
coll., BM(NH)].
