Dear Linda

Monophyly: the derivation of a taxon through one or more
lineages from one immediately ancestral taxon of the same
or lower rank.

Polyphyletic: a term applied to a composite taxon derived from
two or more ancestral sources; not of a single immediate
line of descent.

from: "Principles of Systematic Zoology", E.Mayr.

Maurizio.

To Dave and others-
Will you please explain the terms "monophyletic," "polyphyletic," and so forth. I am supposing that they refer to the ancestry of a genus or other level taxon.
                        Thanks,
                                Linda Bush
