Hello all,

In "A Natural History of Shells" (Vermeij, 1993), page 85, you will
find a very fascinating story on burrowers. The author uses an index to
explain the differences between slow and fast burrowers. E.g. the genus
Donax is given an index of 17, indicating that this is a very fast
burrower.

Now the question : what does this index stands for : 17 meters per
second ;=)
17 times its own body length, ... ???

I would need a relatively quick answer for a colleague, who needs this
information in an educational project. Thanks for all your help,
