Dr. James McLean, esteemed curator of LACM Malacology for the past 36
years, has decided retire effective 31 January, 2001. Jim will become
curator emeritus in order to devote 100% of his research time to completing
his book on the shelled gastropods of the North Pacific Ocean. Therefore,
the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has opened a search for
his successor (see ad below).

                           CURATOR OF MALACOLOGY

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County invites applications for
the position of Full, Associate, or Assistant Curator, to direct its
research and collections program in Malacology. The museum has world-class
holdings of mollusks, with special strength in marine taxa from the eastern
Pacific, including more than 1,700 type lots, and it boasts a rich record of
contributions to molluscan systematics.

We seek an individual who will augment a well-established, productive, and
internationally recognized collections-based research program in
malacology. The area of taxonomic specialization is open. The successful
candidate will be expected to implement innovative methodologies and
techniques of molluscan research, further develop the collection,
contribute to the
Museum's public programs (education and exhibits), and become successful in
obtaining grants to assist in the support of their research and the Museum's
collection. A Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline (i.e., malacology,
invertebrate zoology) is required.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, statement of interest and
professional goals, and the names and addresses of three references by
November 17, 2000, to: Dr. Gordon Hendler, Chair - Department of Invertebrate
Zoology, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition
Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90007. The Museum is an equal
opportunity employer.
