Actually, powdered shell (usually oyster shell) is widely used as a
calcium supplement for humans (not to mention for birds, reptiles, and
other assorted pets).  If you check the label of any "natural" or
"organic" calcium supplement, you will most likely find it listed there.
 So, your granddaughter was just building her bones :-)
