The works of Swedish naturalist Carl von Linne (with an acute accent on the
"e") were published in Latin, as were most scientific books published in
Europe up to the beginning of the nineteenth century. His latinized name is
Carolus Linnaeus, and this is the name that should be used in scientific
names and references, simply because it is the version published on the
cover and front page of his books. The system of abbreviations for names of
authors (L., Lam., etc.) is not currently used in formal works in zoology.
