Regarding the concentration of alcohol (ethanol) to use to preserve
molluscan tissue, I will put forward the following opinion:
For DNA studies - at least 95%.
For general storage - 80%.

Some people suggest 70-75% for general storage, howver, the solution will
draw water out of the tissue and become dilute. You should place the
tissue in a volume of ethanol about 10X the volume of the tissue and after
24-48 hours, replace the solution with fresh ethanol. By using 80% you
are giving yourself a safe margin of error against the replaced solution
becoming too dilute. It appears that autolosis begins at an alcoholic
concentration about 66%.

Regards,
Charlie
