Dear Katherine, Hermit crabs are like a poor man that was given a condo to live
in for nothing. Of course he can't keep it up as well as it's former occupant.
He usually just will let it run down until he finds a better one. He probably
doesn't do any damage to his new home like knocking holes in the walls unless he
comes home drunk one night. But you know as the hermit grows he has to find a
larger shell to live in, so he gives up his former home and another guy moves in
and doesn't make any repairs either. and so on and so on. I'm sure someone
else will give you more answers, sorry for the comedy, couldn't help myself.

Bob Lipe
