Ross and friends,

T. derasa and T. gigas were both listed in CITES under App II on 5/29/83,
while all other Tridacnidae ssp ("includes all species in genera Hippopus
and Tridacna") were added under App II 8/1/85.

App II species are "not threatened with extinction but may become so unless
their trade is regulated."

Import permits are not mandated for App II species by CITES, but an export
permit from the country of origin (in this case, the Phillipines) is
required. Under App II, export permits may be issued for any purpose so
long as export will not be "detrimental to the survival of the species."

I don't have anything to share about Canada-specific regulations regarding
import of CITES fauna.

My reference for the above info is a packet of literature I requested and
received from the Office of Management Authority, U.S Fish and Wildlife
Service, phone 1-800-358-2104.

Hope this is helpful,

Jenny Cline
