Thanks for the alert to the informative article in the most recent
Scientific American (April issue) on cone shell venom components used for
pain therapy
I believe it is a Conus purpurascens that is seen envenomating the poor
restrained guppy in the full page figure in this issue. Interestingly this
same image appeared on the front cover of Science and Medicine 9 years ago !
["Venom Peptides as Human Pharmaceuticals" by George Miljanich, Science and
Medicine, September-October 1997, pp. 6-15], proving that good high
resolution images of cones envenomating are hard to come by. Mostly this
subject matter has been taken on video where the resolution of single frames
is not high enough for reproducing in a quality publication.
