At night, it's easier to see any snails that are near your campfire
than ones that aren't.

Recently burned areas are often inimical to many snail species, even
those that prefer fire-affected habitats.  Ironically, overzealous use
of fire by conservation agencies to maintain fire-mediated habitats has
probably been harmful to many invertebrates, including land snails.
