* what everyone needs in the dark is, as I mentioned before, a headlamp.
Modern headlanmps with LED bulbs are of amazing brightness for the
batteries they require. A headlamp makes true Aristotle's theory of
vision: that vision is due to rays emitted from the eye that reflect off
the surrounding world, and so long as the batteries aren't exhausted,
they make the night functionally almost as bright as day. Some of the
quartz halogen hand-held spotlights make it even brighter than the day,
but they reduce your ability to pick up specimens or write notes.
