Alex Menez:
"[...] I believe it is a responsibility that any collector keep his
specimens and data (the former rendered scientifically useless in the
absence of the latter) 'useable' for researchers/workers today, as well as
for researchers/workers of the future. In time, none of us will own our
collections (we will have died!) and we must make provision, in our routine
management of our collection, that any change of ownership (be it by a
relative, institution etc.) comes with no change in the value of the
collection."

Absolutely exact !

... And for those among us who would persist in digitalmania, try to make a
copy of your data in the simplest format as possible; simple text, for
example, with slashes for separators, or something like that. In this
manner, your infos should not be lost too quickly, and remain easily
recoverable in any database.
By the way, I often use a nice little tool (for PC), which can read and
extract the infos from a nice range of files.
This is Notepad++ : http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/about.php

Cheers

Olivier Caro
