Harry,

I replied this message yesterday but I guess Conch-L refused it (and did not
let me know either...). I think I must erase some lines before replying
messages as it seems parts of the message contains codes not accepted.

I sent a message to the Museum asking information about this shell. I looked
at the book (which is falling apart....) and the photo seems to be inverted.
I imagine Dr. Maury would mention the fact the shell is left-handed. Anyway
lets wait and see if the Museum replies.

Regards

Marcus

Listers - especially landsnailers and Brasilians,

Maury Pinto de Oliveira, whose name is revered by all who work on
schistosomiasis, has published a pictorial treatment of the landsnails of
Brasil
(de) Oliveira, M. P., 1999. Conchas dos caramujos terrestres do Brasil Land
shells from Brazil. published by the author, Juiz da Fora, MG, Brasil. 1-62.
On page 26 he treats Entodina gionensis Morretes, 1940 from São Paulo.
Although only three mm, the species struck me as special since it is
depicted (two views) as a sinistral shell.
Typically this genus, usually placed in the Systrophidae, has dextral
shells. I thought that was the exclusive condition for its shells until I
looked closely at Dr. Oliveira's illustration yesterday.
Can someone tell me if this is a sinistral species? Perhaps the two images
were "flipped" in the process of printing from the photographs, and the
shells are actually dextral in coil.
Abraços,
Harry
