Thanks for the heads-up on China, David.

For those who are interested in such environmental problems, Jared Diamond's
recent book, "Collapse", is fascinating. It does not include much about
mollusks directly, but most people who are interested in collecting live
mollusks are also interested in their habitats. What Diamond does is to show
how previous cultures have changed their environments, sometimes radically,
and what choices they made to deal with the problems, leading to collapse
and extinction (the Anasazi; the Vikings in Greenland; Pitcairn), to
survival in drastically reduced conditions (Mangareva; Easter Island; the
Maya), or to long-term success (Tikipoia; Japan; highland New Guinea). And
he discusses current problems in Montana and China. Diamond is no charlatan;
he is a respected ornithologist and popularizer of science.
