A friend of mine who collected Strombus thersites off Okinawa said they were
generally at SCUBA depths of 90+ feet or so and they were often in "herds."
On most dives he would not see a single specimen and then (I don't know if
it was a certain time of year or if any other cues were involved) they would
encounter a grouping of S. thersites cruising the bottom. My collection
specimen is from his efforts.

Subject: Why is Strombus thersites so rare?
I've been trying to find a nice Strombus thersites for the longest time
now..... with no luck!! Am wondering............... why it is so rare?
Is it found in deeper water than other Strombus? Does it have a very
restricted habitat? Is it normally particularly well camoflaged? Does it
hide in the daytime? I am getting curious about this elusive species.
From Late, lovely summer in Jolly Olde New Scotland,
