Usually, this is so. In exceptional cases, the fossiliferous rock can be
traced to a unique quarry. For instance, on Interstate Highway 20/59 at the
Coaling exit a few miles (kilometers) east of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the
Middle Ordovician riprap derives from a local quarry near Woodstock. There
are very few quarries in this formation (the Chickamauga Limestone) in this
state, and no others are nearby. The quarry and riprap yield identical
rocks and fossils (brachiopods, bryozoans, occasional trilobites, crinoids,
etc.) and both have equivalent value. Even so, I label the quarry and
riprap collections separately, on the principle, "Never do anything to a
shell that you can't reverse."
