A watermark or other mark across the image is the only way of safely putting
a picture on the web. Even then if you really find someone that wants that
picture, they can erase the water mark using different software such as
Corel Photoshop etc.
One can always get around the no right click as well just by going to the
file and save page as ............... well you figure it out.

It is almost impossible to completely protect an image or any work. There
is also the problem of one person giving you the right to use pictures from
their site for educational work - the web slowly gets taken over by the next
generation and they change the rules and what do you do now? If you are
unaware of this passage can you be held accountable.

A shell is a shell. How can a person tell if a Cypraea aurantium is theirs
especially if someone has tweaked it to cover a bad spot.

If a person is selling a shell why shouldn't the picture of it be freely
downloaded. If a picture with no visible copyright or water mark is used by
an educational site does this not encourage other newbie's to seek and learn
more. TRUE, IT IS GOOD TO ALWAYS CHECK WITH THE SOURCE BEFORE USING ANY
PICTURE OR COMMENT but again if their are more than one building or
maintaining the site this can cause confusion and hard feelings.

Well that's my 2 cents for what it is worth.

Subject: How to protect photos on websites

Dear Conch-lers,

as the webmaster of Società Italiana di Malacologia
website, www.sim-online.it, I am struggling to solve a
problem.

As you can see following the links "risorse" - "foto
molluschi vivi", we have a gallery of photos of live
molluscs.

More than once, these photos have been "stolen" and
then used for other internet websites or even printed
on an important newspaper in Italy, without any
advanced request nor permit from us.

I wonder if there is any way to build up an html page
protecting the photos in order to show them but not
allowing downloading.

Can anyone help us?
Thanks and best regards
Paolo
