Hey Belinda & Others:

There is VERY little in the science books in schools these days about
Mollusks. Any teachers who know about shells have tried to write some
material and do actually teach a short section on shells.

I frequently go into the local schools to teach a one-day class on Mollusks.
I taught six classes at our local high school.
Unfortunately our local beaches have been replenished and all the shells
that used to come in have been buried....So not much on our beaches to find.

What is strange is mollusks are the second largest animal kingdom after
insects!

We travel to the Bahamas 4-5 times a year. The children in the Bahamas who
live right on the water....only know about the shells they eat like Queen
Conchs. All shells are Conchs to them. Most of the shells we collect they
have never seen before. It is fun to show them the different shells. Our
Bahama Mama that rents us cottages and cars and has lived in the Bahamas all
her life doesn't know much about shells. She is always amazed at the
beautiful ones we find.
