Dear Carol,
        Numbers, especially such as this one, are hard to visualize, so try
this: the star, or pentacle, is made up of this ratio. If the length of
the short piece that makes up the central pentagon is taken as "2", then
the longer piece from there to the point is "3".
        If piano wire of the same diameter is cut into these lengths, 1, 2, 3,
5, 8, 13, 21, 34 and stretched tightly, the resulting notes are the
familiar "do re me" octave.
