Anna,

It looks like Neripteron rubicunda (von Martens, 1879). These are small
purplish-red shells with light-colored tenting. All of the specimens I have
seen were 15mm or less in size, though I imagine they could get up to 20mm.
They are from Bali and Java. I have never heard the name "bat snail" used,
but it sounds pretty good to me. There are quite a few species in the genus
Neripteron that would fit this name.

Tom E.

Subject: Anyone know what type of gastropod this is? Nerite?

Hi Everyone

I have been sent a picture of an unknown gastropod by an aquatic retailer
here in England. He bought a new type of snail for freshwater aquariums
from a wholesaler. They were simply called 'Bat Snails'. The whole batch
died within a few days. He very much wants to find out what species they
are, as he would like to order some more, but obviously can't until he
knows what went wrong the first time.

He has posted a picture of the empty shells left after the snails' death at:

www.waysideaquatics.co.uk/batsnail.jpg

I feel they may be some type of nerite, but I can't find anything on the
Internet under 'Bat Snail'. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Anna
