Garmin is the big name and I support it.
If altitude is really wanted - e.g. collecting fossils at 3,000 ft in a
coral reef -
then there are those that are for camping / hiking that have Altitude.
If it is
for coastal collections - the altitude would be more or less sea level
unless it is
deep.  Then depth meters for divers would be the -altitude indicator.

I think the real object is ease of use.  So one would use it always.
Some don't have
maps - that might be better.  Note taking and Lat, Long.  And they help
direct back to that
or another point if given the coordinates.  There are stores that have
many versions -
look at climbing and exploring stores - camping sections in departments
and naturally
Garmin or Amazon on line.   Explore before you buy - it will be with you
for some time.
