It is perhaps worth noting that Charles Wilson Peale (1741-1827) established
the first popular museum of natural history in America in 1786.  His
collection included many recent and fossil shells.  Peale was also known to
deal in natural history objects, although I have seen no evidence of him
having prepared printed lists of Mollusca for sale.
