Dear Harry,

in those cases it imay preferable for the amateur to use a digital camera
with some macro equipment to copy big formats. I will order the digitization
of the atlas in Goettingen via the "Digi-book of desire"-service of the
library ( http://gdz.sub.uni-goettingen.de/index.php?id=2&L=1 ), but I think
it will take about 3 months for processing this order. I will report to the
list when the book is online at (
http://gdz.sub.uni-goettingen.de/en/dms/colbrowse/?tx_goobit3_search%5Bextquery%5D=ISWORK%3A1&DC=zoologica )
.

Here in europe there seems to be a time consuming discussion to establish a
BHL-Europe that shall mirror the american one and bundle all books
digitalized in europe with stable links and (hopefully) sophistocated search
functions better than in Gallica. I have heard that there shall be a new
computer centre established somewhere in europe for this project. That
sounds that it will take a considerable time before start, but there are
already a comittee and conferences..... but fortunately also money from the
EC. It seems also that some books are already digitized, but not put online
yet, in awareness of BHL-Europe. Maybe somebody else do have a more direct
contact to the project and can report the list about it.
Bernd

Dear Bernd,

The impediment to digitization may reside in the
format of the Atlas, which is in folio.

My copy (from Harland Enterprises) measures 29.4
by 42.6 cm. That's a bit large for almost all scanners.

Harry
