One should always be aware that languages evolve over time. The French written by e. g. Bruguière, Lamarck or contemporaries, is quite different from modern French ... although quite funny at times. Same goes for the Dutch of Rumphius.

I use Google translate too for certain languages I don't master myself (e.g. Italian to get a grasp of Brocchi and Monterosato's ideas and interpretations), and it works to get a rough idea (as Marien stated), yet fails at the specific finesse of a language (as Marlo indicates) or when the description is written in an old version of a language.

I would say ... when in doubt ... ask a native speaker ...
