THE CAPTURED COWRY

One of the rare exceptions to the 'rights' of authors and
photographers is a publication such as the 'old' Hawaiian Shell News,
which openly stated that its contents were not copyrighted.

Any who submitted or permitted their work to be published in this
manner were not expecting to retain their 'rights.' The
Hawaiian Malacological Society's officers, directors -- and the
Shell News' editors -- wisely and clearly saw the need for an
educational publication which encouraged the propagation of
information. And that spirit is the reason for the Achive site of
cowry-related articles which I have made available.

The point has been well stated already... it is in poor taste, and
often illegal, to use other persons' work without -- at least --
crediting her/him/them; and it is one of the lowest acts to use
another's work out of context. Shame, shame, shame...

On the other hand, most authors and photographers forbear the
'unauthorized' use of their work if it reinforces the point(s)
being made (and doesn't diminish their royalties too much -- and
especially if it helps).

So, keep your standards up and the information flowing. And,
for the umpteenth time, why doesn't someone who is hot-to-trot
on cone shells put up the cone-related articles from the Shell News!
Loads of it there -- maybe more than for cowries!
(Aw, who wants to read about those dull little things, anyway!?)

Ta, ta and Aloha,

makuabob (a.k.a. Bob Dayle)
