At the risk of being too moderate, just how young was the child that
reached through the wire fence to the otter enclosure? It is hard to
blame a toddler for such a thing, and young kids move quickly!
 
The otters are being put down presumably to check for rabies so that
the child does not have to have the shots. In days gone by this was a
very painful series of shots, but today it is less so. The child will
have to have a shot in the region of each bite, but if it was only two
or three fingers, then the procedure should not be too hard to take.
 
I wonder if the parents were under the assumption that the shots would
be as painful as they used to be. Perhaps someone should also ask them
if their child would like to grow up with the knowledge that because
of a mistake, he or she indirectly caused the death of these
creatures.
 
Do otters develop hydrophobia? !!!
