The name ^Cochlicopa^ was introduced by Ferussac on 6 April 1821, on p. 24 (quarto edition) or p. 28 (folio edition) on his ^Tableau Systematique de la famille des limacons, Cochleae^. He gave a short description "Ouverture etroite, coquille ovoide ou turriculee". He included two other groups within ^Cochlicopa^: ^Polyphemus^ Montfort, 1810 and ^Styloides^ Ferussac, the latter being a nude name. No species were included by name. Since ^Polyphemus^ Montfort is an available name, ^Cochlicopa^ must be considered a replacement name for ^Polyphemus^. The type species of ^Polyphemus^ and thus of ^Cochlicopa^ is ^Bulimus glans^ Bruguiere by monotypy. ^Bulimus glans^ is a synonym of ^Bulla voluta^ Gmelin, 1791, which is the type species of ^Oleacina^ Roeding, 1798. Therefore ^Cochlicopa^ is a synonym of ^Oleacina^.

Ferussac's work was published in parts, with the next part appearing in May or July (depending on whether it was the quarto or the folio version). In this part, on p. 50 (quarto) or p. 54 (folio), he gave a more complete definition of ^Cochlicopa^ and included a number of species, including ^Helix lubrica^ Muller, which is often accepted as the type species of the genus. However, this is irrelevant to question of the type species of ^Cochlicopa^, because it was published later.

The foregoing is based on A. S. Kennard (1942, Proceedings of the Malacological Society of London 25(3):105-118.
