Hi Rob,
There is an item in the Florida constitution called "Sovereignty of the Seas"
that states in essence, that the beach belongs to the public from the mean
high tide line into the sea - in other words - the beach is entirely public,
the only problem is beach access. So roam where you want to, just make sure
you're parked legally!

A couple of good out-west motels are the Blue Dolphin and Mitch's
Sandcastles. They're both on West Gulf Drive past Rabbit Road and this time
of year the beach around there is deserted. It's about a 2 mile walk to
Bowman's from there.

Also, don't be fooled into thinking the shelling won't be up to par - many
winter storms bury shells that don't get uncovered until summer! We go to
Sanibel every year, and have yet to be disappointed! And Bailey's has the
sand scoops, too, if you need one - also, someone suggested recently that a
pool net is a great "mini" dredge.
Have fun, and don't forget to visit the Shell Museum - it's incredible!
Joni
