Hi Tom
I think that might be true, depending on what is included as a 'mussel'.  If
it is a member of the Order Unionidae then according to the American
Fisheries SocietySpecial Publication 19 then there are 292 species in about
48 genera.
PS - If you need a compete list of the species I bet I could power up my
brand new scanner and send you the pages!
