Large specimens can be cleaned of bady parts by the usual methods for
mollusks.  Freezing, etc.  Rinse out remnants with a water pick, etc.
Small to minute species can be done with the water pick only.  Gently scrub
outside with soft toothbrush, maybe a little dish detergent.  Don't take
off the periostracum!
