You can always use the synonym as a varietal name in case a new review based on living animals (DNA etc) shows that there really are more Caribbean species than can be distinguished by shell characteristics alone (morphometrics).  (The rest of the world shows lots more species using the same criteria, so that part of the study is a lot more believable.)
