I believe that Voluticella has been considered an aberrant scaphelline, though I do not have the reference at hand.  Anton Olenik probably has a more current opinion.  Scaphellines were certainly doing odd things in the Eocene of the southeastern U.S., as evidenced by Santeevoluta.
