Actually, you can get some DNA out of hair that was cut off and
not pulled out (from the bulb). That will be mitocondrial DNA,
and with the right extraction tecnic it is quite easy to take
some DNA out of it.
Possibly the same happens with shells, as some mitocondrial DNA
can be extracted out of the protein part of the shell.
