Dear Tim,

I'm no expert, but I will tell you what I think anyway.

S. floridus var. depauperata: I don't have the original description, but
Abbott (1960) states that it is described as white or yellow with five
transverse (axial) bands of small , very bright spots of reddish brown or
russet. The shell was described from the Tuamostus, not Easter Island as
most dealers would label them. Although I have purchased the form
depauperatus several times, I have never received a shell form that location
or of that description. Of those so named in my collection, even when the
pattern (the basis for the form) contains axially alligned spots, the
overall pattern still remains spiral. I would expect an axial pattern to
appear more like the form S.mutabilis zebriolatus.

S. hirasei in my book is the hybrid form of vomer X bulla. It was originally
described by Kuroda as a species in "Venus, Vol. 12", but was reviewed by
Kronenberg in 1999 in "The Festivus, Vol 31(6)" and deemed a hybrid , thus
not warranting a "valid" label. I do not have either of the works cited
above, but would certainly welcome copies from any source.(I have tried
without response to contact The Festivus by email).

Strombus thersites in the Philippines ? It's not reported in Springsteen &
Leobrera or in Abbott's genus Strombus IPM.
That doesn't mean it's not there, but I have not seen any reports of that
locality. You never know what you'll see on the net though. You might even
see a picture of Eustrombus gigas in an ad for a Hawaii vacation :)
