this new taxon of Z. friendii is described in Visaya 1(4):30-39 as a
subspecies and not as a species.
There are malacologists who do not recognize subspecies in principle but
their opinions
are often not in harmony regarding certain mollusc species (whether they are
valid or not); a definition of a term "species", suitable to all
malacologists does not exist and more than 20 different theories are known
regarding species concepts.
The others consider that knowing intraspecific variations is important for
understanding the process of speciation and subspecies should be described
and studied but their opinions regarding a concrete taxon may often be not
in harmony too.
