There is no need to worry about Nikon lenses disappearing. Nikon make digital SLR cameras that use the same mount as all their SLRs. All Nikon lenses, new and old, can thus be used. It follows that all the lenses they make for their digital SLRs can also be used on most of their more recent film cameras.
Older Nikon lenses are infinitely rebuildable, and most don't need it. This means that there are literally millions in existence. I use a 1964 lens on my digital SLR (D100) all the time.

Greetings
I heard on the news here in NY that Nikon will faze out most film cameras in
their product line. I then read it online at a free newsletter I get
(nytimes.com). Nikon lenses and equipment in time might be hard to get. For shell
pictures and close-ups, that item you were thinking of buying, do it soon!
There are some Museum staff members on the list, is your museum heavenly
invested in Nikon equipment? Sorry if this email is out of the blue but I think
it is worthy of posting.
