Needed for research... the only juvenile known from either of these
two families is a single specimen of Humphreyia strangei. Juveniles
will be up to adult size but with articulating valves covering only a
tiny portion of the anterodorsal surface of the body (older
penicillid juveniles will have a "saddle" secreted around the valves,
fixing them at 120-180 degrees). In some species the body will be
covered by a periostracal layer. They will be nestling in rock or
coral crevices/borings or in sand/mud, depending on the species.
