Hello,

Ed Petuch and I have reviewed the Oliva book by Hunon, Hoarau and Robin.
It is actually, very good. They have corrected many of the mistakes made by
recent authors. We agree with them concerning lacanientai and poppei.
Lacanientai is an Ollivellid and poppei may represent a new genus in
Olividae.

They did miss several corrections concerning renaming of species where the
author had applied a previously used taxa. Examples Oliva sibogae P&S, 1986
for Oliva dubia Schepman, was preempted by Oliva dubia Lea (a fossil from
Virginia) and Oliva hanleyorum P&S for Oliva cylindrica Marrat, which was
also preempted by Oliva cylindrica Sowerby (another fossil). Hanleyorum is
a good species that is related to Oliva hirasei not Oliva vidua. It is also
very rare, but we have seen at least ten specimens from various localities
and they are very consistent.

They also missed a few good species that were ignored by Tursch and later,
Sterba. Overall, they have a very good grasp of Oliva taxonomy and I feel
that of the three recent works, it is the most correct. However, they did a
great job with both the Panamic and Caribbean Oliva by recognizing many of
the good species that had been synonymized by other recent authors.

Also congratulations TO Klaus and Christina Groh. Conchbooks continues to
produce a very high quality product.

Best wishes, see you at COA

Dennis Sargent and Ed Petuch

PS: If anyone has Christian Hunon's email address, I would like to
congratulate him on a job well done.

Hello All,
I'm also curious about this book. And why such a previously neglected family
suddenly has more monographs than any of the "major" families. I understand
from a large book dealer there is now another Petuch and Sargent book coming
out.Give me a break or at least my wallet a break. What could they all find
to talk about. I'm starting to wax nostalgic for my Burch and Burch with the
rusty staples and disintegrating manila paper and my Zeigler and Porecca
with the illustrations that are large enough to be of use and that actually
contains original descriptions.
