Most of us would agree with you, Kev. Martin was referring to those who
would name a new species after themselves (self-gratification), not to
honor other people (gratification).

Naming of new species is always a problem particularly in not creating
further confusion to an already overladen synonomous list.
 
In the many previously unamed species that I have worked on, I have
tried many latin combinations but seem to restrict myself to localities,
which are usually very safe, or to honour people who have assisted with
my research because of this problem.
 
Many collectors generously donate specimens which they do not recognise
and have sent for identification, when it is found that they have not
previously been described.
 
I do not consider this arrogant, quite the contrary nor has it ever been
my intent that naming after deserving people is to their self indulgence
in fact I have never told any person that I intend naming a species
after them.
 
I thank these generous people and trust they will continue their
unselfish attitude to the study of marine molluscs by continuing to
donate unidentified specimens to institutions where they know they will
be used for research.
