That is extremely unfortunate..I once did a "mini-study" on the beaches
of Fort Story, VA on the use of Donax population counts as a check on
water pollution levels. Navy vessels and others tended to pump bilges
and there were often "leaks" of other types just off Ft Story,(very
close to Virginia Beach). The population fluctuations in the test zones
had a very strong and almost immediate correlation to these
occurrences.This was happening at the start and end of every cruise. The
ships heading out and those coming back were readily visible from the
beach. Schedules for merchant traffic was  available from the Harbor
Master, and as we were directly involved with the Navy vessels coming
and going, I had a good grip on their scheds, too.I worked on this back
in the mid 70's when we were stationed in Virginia. It was very
interesting, just a sort of spare time obsession.
