Remember Martha?
No? Martha was the last surviving Passenger Pigeon. She died at the
Cincinnati Zoo many years ago. Reports from the last century indicated
that flights of passenger pigeons were in the millions, that they
blocked out the sun, that they took hours to pass. People shot them
without even aiming. Just point the gun at the sky or the tree. You just
might want to remember Martha when you think about St. gigas, or O.
porphyria, or any one of a number of critters that don't "seem" to be
too highly endangered.
