Dear Robert and Betty Lippe
I visited your very nice web site. I hope you will not be angry with me if I
will try to make a small correction to your current list of seashells. You
listed Cypraea nebrites stellata Perry (that means Cyp. nebrites subspecies
stellata) and this can produce some confusion. Cypraea stellata Perry, 1811
is a doubtful synonym of Cypraea erosa Linne, 1758; doubtful because of its
not fully clear original description by Perry (picture 2 on plate 23 and its
locality - Cape of Good Hope !).
Cypraea nebrites Melvill, 1888 was originally described as a variety of
Cypraea erosa. Later Cypraea nebrites was considered as a subspecies of
Cypraea erosa by some authors or as a valid species by some other scholars.
So Cyp.stellata can not be a subspecies of Cyp. nebrites or even a forma of
Cyp. nebrites.
Cypraea nebrites is a very variable species. Maybe you have some unusual
form of this species and decided to name it "stellata"? Any information
about this subject is very interesting and your comments will be very
appreciated.
Respectfully
Eduard Heiman
