Hello all,
For anybody who is interested, and is not afraid of scientific texts :
there's a very informing article in last week's Nature on the structure
of the S. gigas shell. Strange how a "brain-less" animal manages to
build up such a complicated "crystal palace". Read and be marvelled, the
reference is :
Structural basis for the fracture toughness of the shell of the conch
Strombus gigas / by Kamat, S.; Su, X.; Ballarini, R.; Heuer, A.H. -
(Nature vol. 405, no. 6790, pp. 1036-1040, 29 June 2000)
If you don't have access to Nature magazine, I can copy the article (for
personal use only, please !!!!) from my issue here at the library. (but
check at your local library first...)
Greetings
